Get Your CDL Without Going to Truck Driving School

February 19, 2015 By United States Vets

From Military.com

If you drove trucks in the military, there’s a good chance you can skip driving school and slide into the semi-trailers-534577_1280commercial driver’s seat with relative ease, thanks to an initiative approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Most state transportation departments now offer a Military Skills Test Waiver for CDL applicants who plan to drive vehicles similar to those used in the military. It waives the road skills test requirement — meaning if you qualify, all you need to do is pass the written exam in order to get your CDL.

Jenny McDowell, military recruiting manager at Schneider National, says the waiver program is a great way to streamline the CDL process for military members. “They’ve gained years of driving experience while serving our country. It just makes sense to be able to transfer those skills to a commercial license,” the Army veteran explains.

To be eligible, you must be active duty military or a recent honorably discharged veteran with at least two years experience operating a commercial motor vehicle as part of your military job requirements. To apply, fill out the Military CDL Skills Test Waiver Form.

Currently, more than 30 states accept the Military Skills Test Waiver. Several others are working on the process.

Schneider National is hiring truck drivers in nearly every state that accepts the waiver — making it that much easier for you to get in the driver’s seat. Call 800-44-PRIDE to find out how your military skills will be valued at Schneider.
