Within the gamut of issues that face the veteran is isolation whether it be the lack of resources, awareness of programs or limited means. Like many mentoring programs and finding one specifically for the veteran may take some research. The United States Vets Inc. Compatriot Program strives to build the bridge between vets, families and friends. The human need to connect should never be underestimated. With a simple phone call to say “hello” or maybe an evening out bowling or sharing a cup of coffee with another vet mother, you could make a huge difference in a veteran’s life.
The following excerpts are from StoryCorps.org stories about where a bridge can take you.
“Tell me about the day Brian died.”
Lance Corporal Brian Parrello was the only member of his Marine platoon who didn’t make it home from Iraq. They were patrolling near the Haditha Dam when Brian was killed by an IED in January 2005. He was 19 years old. Since then, Brian’s platoon has become close with his family. They recently marked the 10-year anniversary of his death with Brian’s family in his hometown of West Milford, New Jersey.
“It is difficult to watch anyone let go of hope, but when it’s your son, it’s excruciating.”
Scott Skiles speaks with his son, Marine Corporal Zach Skiles, about Zach’s hopelessness after returning home from Iraq.
“I can tell you what was in your husband’s mind because it was in mine.”
Stefanie Pelkey is a former Army Captain. Her husband, Army Captain Michael Pelkey served in Iraq in 2003. He was diagnosed with PTSD a year after he returned. Army Sergeant Thomas “TJ” Hart is also a veteran and struggles with PTSD. Stefanie and TJ became friends while volunteering at a Veteran’s Center in Houston, TX.
It doesn’t matter what branch, rank, or where or when you served, the veteran is a gem of our community. All veterans and their families are encouraged to become part of this extraordinary experience by being a compatriot.
The Compatriot Program will fill a veteran’s life with friendship and connection. What a better way to share with a fellow hero! Stories like those above and many others are waiting to be shared right here in the Toledo area.
