Nathan Gembreska: The 2018 George E. Prokos Veterans Education Fund Recipient

Born and raised in Toledo this year’s recipient joined the the Marine Corps straight from graduating from Whitmer High School, with honors. Nathan was stationed in Okinawa Japan with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force Band. An accomplished musician, Nathan received glowing recommendations and presented an outstanding essay to the organization’s judging committee.

Spotlight: Carolyn Nagy

As the public relations coordinator for United States Vets Inc. for the past four years, it has been my privilege to meet and interview outstanding veterans in the Toledo area. Regrettably, this is my final veteran interview for the organization’s website and it is an honor that it is with Carolyn Nagy, advocate and representative for the Women Veterans Initiative.

The Toledo women’s veteran community is all the more better with an engaging advocate for them by the name of Carolyn Nagy. Carolyn is the focus of this month’s veteran interview and she shares some very interesting encounters and journeys in the military and in the civilian world.

Nagy is from a small farming community near Warren, Ohio. Although she did not come from a large family, the military roots were well planted as four uncles and a cousin served our country as well. [Read more…]

Lost in Military Translation? Communicating Service Skills into Civilian Language

It can be challenging to accurately and confidently portray your military experience when composing a resume or a cover letter. Civilian hiring managers, although many are experienced dealing with veterans, will have their first exposure to you via the language you use in your submission materials. These documents must be as professional and important as your military service and skills.

Spend time with other veterans or colleagues who are employed in the same occupation you are considering. They can be a cornucopia of information. Take advantage of search filters when investigating skill requirements.They can help you can target specific civilian occupations to match your military skills.
