February’s Compatriot Meeting entitled, Navigating-The Justice System, Programs for Veterans, attracted several veterans who had questions and concerns about particular procedures and resources. Speaker Thomas Luettke, Reentry Coordinator and member of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, spoke to veterans about programs that assist those in the criminal justice system with reentry. He offered impacting advice to the audience by explaining the sources and contacts for obtaining useful information for veterans dealing with this specific issue.
One point Attorney Luettke stated during the discussion was the transition of judges within the system from ”old world” judiciary decisions to 21st century judges’ decisions.
Revolving door issues regarding benefits, dealing with legal clinics, and county veteran centers were also discussed. The common problems surfaced of not only applying for benefits but how to best use the VA system.
Major comparisons were also a focus of the evening specifically the Vietnam era veterans to the new veterans who served/are serving in the Middle East. “There are programs addressing everyone from youth offenders to adult offenders,” Luettke explained. More information on these programs can be obtained by contacting Mr. Luettke on our Resource Page.
Attendees were actively involved in the evening’s presentation. One veteran voiced the issue of the water supply at Marine Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. In 1974, a base order required safe disposal of solvents. Although warned that improper handling could cause drinking water contamination, solvents were dumped or buried near base wells for years. He served during the time this problem arose at the camp.
Fellowship and communication within the veteran community are highly encouraged and veterans can connect with other veterans through our Compatriot Program. Those attending had a refreshing and important opportunity to look into a system that is difficult to maneuver and receive advice to help them through the processes.
