Two Toledo businesses stepping up to help local vets May 18, 19
TOLEDO, Ohio, May 6, 2019 – During the weekend of Armed Forces Day, residents can help a local veterans referral agency raise money for veterans, while getting good eats and getting rid of unwanted clothing.
On May 18, Armed Forces Day, City Barbeque, 7402 Central Ave., will donate 25% of proceeds after patrons show an event flyer from 10:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., while Nothing Over 9 will donate $0.20 for every pound of clothing the public donates during business hours at its 2543 S. Reynolds Road location, May 18 and 19.
“We’re thrilled that City Barbeque and Nothing Over 9 stepped up to help us help local Ohio and Michigan veterans,” said Carolyn Nagy, women veteran’s initiative coordinator with United States Vets, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit that connects veterans and their family members with area support services.
“Through the two businesses, people can clean out their closets and get a good meal, while helping those who risked their lives in service to the U.S.” said Nagy. “That’s a great way to pay tribute on Armed Forces Day.”
Founded in 2006, United States Vets “has helped thousands of people over the years,” according to the organization’s Secretary/Treasurer Chris Cremean. Through various annual fundraising efforts, the group uses contributions to help veterans and their families through direct assistance (case-by-case basis), through an annual $5,000 scholarship, and, at no charge, by connecting them to one of more than a dozen area organizations, depending on the need.
Cremean said the United States Vets’ 2019 fundraising goal is $20,000, and has several more events planned this year, plus a “Veterans Town Hall.” While details are still being worked out, Cremean says the event will be an opportunity for veterans to connect with area organizations offering needed services, and a public discussion of the needs of local men and women who served in the U.S. military.
