The American Legion Welcomes All Veterans into Its’ Community

August 3, 2019 By Zigit

The American Legion’s welcomes all veterans who have served at any point in time since December 7th, 1941.

Delaware, OH, July 31. 2019 – On Tuesday, July 30th, 2019 President Trump signed The Legion Act – Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service Act – which redefines The American Legion’s membership eligibility dates. The new membership eligibility now spans from December 7th, 1941, until a time when Congress determines that the United States is no longer at war. The Legion Act opens the door for approximately six million veterans and their families to access American Legion programs and benefits.

The American Legion is a congressionally chartered organization and the nations largest veteran service organization. The American Legion was previously opened only to veterans who served during periods of declared periods of war such as World War I, World War II, Korean, and Vietnam.  The American Legion identified nearly 1,600 U.S. service members who were killed or wounded in hostile operation during periods that were not recognized as a period of war by the federal government. The Legion Act now permits every veteran who has served at any point in time since December 7th, 1941 and honorably discharged to become a member of The American Legion.

The American Legion is committed to mentoring youth, sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members. If you are a veteran who would like to join The American Legion or like to learn more about the programs and benefits of The American Legion – call The American Legion Department of Ohio at 740-362-7478 or email legion@ohiolegion.com or visit legion.org.
