The Vietnam Veteran – Issues Then, Issues Now

Vietnam. A controversial war abroad manifested itself into controversy at home. It was this writer’s first experience with Vietnam Vets when I was young. The commercials I remember were “Don’t forget, hire the vet” and, having no one in my family who served there, images of the war were shielded from me, as the evening news televised horrific reports and atrocities. Television dials in many households turned to the antics of Rocky and Bullwinkle rather than face the ugliness of the issues. In the real world, the Vietnam veteran image was negative. Women Vets Are Heard!

Women veterans spoke up at the Women Veterans Initiative on February 20 at the Toledo Main Library. This meeting was developed to learn more about the women veteran community in the Toledo area and identify their roles and discuss issues they face. Navigating through the System

February’s Compatriot Meeting entitled, Navigating-The Justice System, Programs for Veterans, attracted several veterans who had questions and concerns about particular procedures and resources. Speaker Thomas Luettke, Reentry Coordinator and member of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, spoke to veterans about programs that assist those in the criminal justice system with reentry. He offered impacting advice to the audience by explaining the sources and contacts for obtaining useful information for veterans dealing with this specific issue. [Read more…]
